When Bernard Cornwell was refused a Green Card to work in the States, he decided to earn a living by writing, a job that needed no permit from the US government. He had for some years been wanting to write the adventures of a British soldier in the Napoleonic wars, and it seemed an ideal opportunity to leave the BBC and launch a new career as an author, and to be alongside Judy, whom he married in 1980. The first Richard Sharpe book, Sharpe's Rifles, was published in 1981 by Collins (now HarperCollins), and since then there have been 20 Sharpe books to date (June 2005), along with a series of 14 TV Movies created in the 1990s by Central TV (now Carlton TV). But the story is not yet over - as the author says, "Sharpe and Harper will march again."
Sharpe's Wiki was founded in June 2005 by Steve Bradburn, and it is intended to be the wiki for the Sharpe series, bringing together a comprehensive list of the characters, events, and locations within the books and films. The wiki pages can easily be edited by anyone, at any time. The purpose of a wiki is that anyone can help build it, and we would welcome any fans of the Sharpe series to help us create a comprehensive index of the Sharpe universe.
We have a canon to explain our approach to the what we include within Sharpe's Wiki, but basically it covers the Sharpe books by Bernard Cornwell (with notes as to where they do not match), and also the TV Movies (with notes as to where they differ from the books). We also have a policy which lays down a little structure to help the site develop in a more structured manner.
So, if you have read this far then you are probably a fan of Richard Sharpe, and if so, and you have a copy of one of the books nearly, then please go and open it at a random page, find a fact that we have not yet added to the wiki, and add it to the relevant page. In doing so you will have joined the ranks of the Sharpe's Own Volunteers, who have helped to create this encyclopedia of all things Sharpe ... Sharpe's Wiki.
